Is Zakopane worth visiting in winter?
Yes—winter is when Zakopane feels most like itself. Snow on the Tatras, wooden highlander houses, horse-drawn sleighs and steaming outdoor thermal pools are the reasons most visitors come. It is also the season when roads, slopes and Krupówki are at their busiest.
The useful question is not whether to go, but how. A day trip from Krakow, a ski day and a two-night local stay need different bookings. This guide compares the winter day trips that are bookable now and links to our deeper guides for each activity.
Three ways to do Zakopane in winter
A day trip from Krakow
Best if you are based in Krakow and want one winter day in the mountains. Organised tours handle the two-hour-plus drive each way, which matters on icy roads. The most winter-specific option combines a snowmobile ride with thermal baths; the most reviewed option combines Gubałówka, Krupówki and the Chochołów baths.
A ski day
At our November 4 check, we found no organised ski day trip from Krakow that was currently bookable on Viator or GetYourGuide. Skiers generally stay in Zakopane, or arrange a private transfer and hire equipment at the slopes. See where to ski below.
Two or more nights locally
Staying in Zakopane lets you pick the clearest day for a viewpoint and avoid repeating the drive. Book local outings such as a sleigh ride or the Kasprowy Wierch cable car from your accommodation rather than from Krakow.

Read the snowmobile terms before you pay
The featured snowmobile day meets in central Krakow and includes thermal-bath entry, but the snowmobile rental itself is paid locally, and a quad activity may replace snowmobiles when there is not enough snow. Budget for the local fee and decide in advance whether a quad ride is an acceptable substitute.
Our snowmobile tours guide covers riding time, driver requirements and the questions to ask. If snow is uncertain on your date, a thermal-bath combination is the lower-risk choice: the pools operate in any weather.
Where to ski near Zakopane
Zakopane is Poland’s best-known ski town, but its slopes are spread out. Choose by ability and how far you want to travel each morning:
- Kasprowy Wierch: high-mountain terrain reached by the PKL cable car from Kuźnice. Suited to confident skiers; operation depends on wind and conditions. Read our Kasprowy Wierch guide for the station and ticket choices.
- Smaller slopes in town: areas such as Polana Szymoszkowa and Harenda are closer to central accommodation and better for a shorter or easier session.
- Larger resorts nearby: Białka Tatrzańska, east of Zakopane, and Witów, to the west near Chochołów, are popular for longer days on groomed runs.
Check each operator’s current lift status and ticket prices for your date. Snow cover, opening dates and pass options change from season to season.
Other winter experiences
- Thermal baths: sitting in hot outdoor pools with a mountain view is the classic winter combination. Compare packages in our thermal baths guide or tickets only in the Chochołów tickets guide.
- Sleigh rides (kulig): a traditional horse-drawn outing, often with a bonfire. Confirm the snow substitution terms in our sleigh rides guide.
- Morskie Oko in snow: a long but non-technical walk to the lake, with specific winter risks. See Morskie Oko in winter.
- December and the holidays: see our December guide and New Year’s Eve in Zakopane.
Roads, crowds and short days
The road between Krakow and Zakopane is busiest on winter weekends and during Polish school winter holidays (ferie zimowe), which are staggered by region between January and February. Treat any tour duration as approximate and do not plan a fixed evening appointment in Krakow on the same day.
Daylight is short in midwinter. A tour that leaves early gives you the most usable light in the mountains. Before any walk beyond town, check the Tatra National Park bulletin; trails that are easy in summer can be icy or closed.
What to pack for a winter day
- Waterproof boots with real grip—Krupówki and viewpoints are often packed snow or ice. Light ice grips help.
- Warm layers, hat, gloves and a spare pair of socks.
- Swimwear, a towel and flip-flops for any thermal-bath stop; check whether your ticket includes towels or sauna access.
- Cash or a card for local fees such as snowmobile rental, and a charged phone with the supplier’s contact details.
