Is Zakopane a good place for New Year’s Eve?
Yes, if you want a lively mountain-town night and book early. Zakopane draws large crowds from across Poland for Sylwester. Restaurants run set dinners and highlander-style parties, Krupówki fills up and the town has hosted large televised outdoor concerts in recent years.
The trade-off is demand: rooms, restaurant tables and road space are all under pressure. This guide covers the order to book things in, the local fireworks rule and how to make New Year’s Day work. We do not list an unconfirmed 2026 event programme; check the city’s official announcements for this year’s plans.
Book in this order
- Accommodation. Many places set minimum stays over New Year. Check whether a gala dinner is included or charged separately.
- Transport. Decide how you will get to Zakopane on December 30 or 31 and back on January 1 or 2. Holiday traffic on the road from Krakow can be heavy.
- Dinner or party. Set menus and parties usually need advance tickets. Read what the price includes and the finish time.
- Daytime activities. Fill December 31 and January 1 with low-commitment plans: a thermal-bath visit, a viewpoint or a sleigh ride, confirmed for those exact dates.
Fireworks: the rule and the reality
Zakopane’s city council banned the use of fireworks in public spaces in 2019, to protect people, animals and the national park next to the town. The rule applies on New Year’s Eve too, even though enforcement in large crowds is difficult and private fireworks are still seen.
Do not plan your night around setting off fireworks. If loud bangs are a concern—for children or a dog travelling with you—choose accommodation away from Krupówki and the main gathering places.
Staying in Krakow instead?
A Zakopane day trip from Krakow on December 31 returns you to Krakow for the evening, which can work well if your party is in the city. Do not expect a late return from Zakopane after midnight on an ordinary tour.
Confirm that your chosen tour runs on December 31 or January 1 before relying on it; holiday departures can differ from the usual schedule. The options below are good starting points.

New Year’s Day in Zakopane
January 1 is a public holiday in Poland. Some shops and services close or open later, and the morning is quiet. A thermal-bath visit is a popular way to recover; check holiday opening hours and whether you need to book. Our Chochołów tickets guide explains the options.
For a walk, keep it short and well within your experience, and check the Tatra National Park bulletin first. For wider winter ideas, see Zakopane in winter and our December guide.
What to wear on the night
Midnight outdoors in the mountains is cold. Wear proper winter boots with grip, thermal layers, a hat and gloves, even if you are moving between restaurants. Keep your phone charged, agree a meeting point with your group and save your accommodation’s address offline.
